She is taken as a prisoner and forced to live with the MacKenzie clan in the wilderness of the Highlands; furthermore, she will have to marry Jamie to become a Scottish in order to escape the hands of the fearsome Captain Black Jack Randall, ancestor of her husband Frank. A marriage of necessity between Claire and Jamie ensues, thanks to which the two will end up falling madly in love. Intense chapters of adventures, eroticism and love, beyond the boundaries of time.

What if you too could go back in time through the Craigh na Dun stones? This is a question that is often asked to readers of the Outlander series, but I have always avoided answering, especially in a creative way. I cannot profane a sacred text such as Outlander is to me, but at the same time I cannot escape a writing challenge, which fascinates me, attracts me, seduces me with just a look. An instigation to sin! 😐
In April I was really busy beyond all limits with studying for an important selection (it went well!), I had to postpone my answer. In summer I had to rest from the mental stress of that period, which had drained my creative capacity. So, after this delay, I finally have my story. And may Diana Gabaldon forgive me for daring… 😉

Craigh na Dun
The Veil of Time

The light is dim, the air almost still, only a few short cold gusts reach my back from time to time.
I am facing the famous stones of Craigh na Dun, a circle of granite rocks of mysterious origins. And even more obscure is their meaning. Nobody knows what these boulders were used for, so tall and austere, a symbol of lost knowledge. Some believe they are frozen giants from ancient eras, to others they are a primitive lunar calendar or the vestiges of a distant pagan temple, for some they are huge tombstones from an archaic cemetery or dismal effigies of a place of execution. Or maybe they really are portals to travel through the coils of time.
I am observing them curiously, with a mixture of reverence and respect. They are all different, unique in shape and size, but so similar to each other. Nothing similar to the rocky ledges of this enchanted land. Even with this low brightness, you can see the brilliant veins that cross them and that color so pale, shining even under the moss that tries in vain to envelop them.
They scare me a little. But afraid of what? To really cross the boundaries of time?
Approaching cautiously to the center of the circle, I look up at the largest one, the stone split by a vertical crack, two boulders juxtaposed like heavy knockers on a door into the unknown.
What if it works for me too?
I hear a low hum, but I’m not sure it’s the stones. It vibrates in my ears and joins the beating drum of my heart.
What future could I have in the past? Where on earth could I go?
This land does not belong to me, I am really a foreigner here, an outlander from the continent, a native speaker of a distant country. Yet I have never really felt at home like in these places, as if my ancestors had deep roots among these lush duns and transparent lochs, I feel their call running through my veins.
What would I take with me in a hostile age?
I have no medical knowledge, and no knowledge of even herbs. My knowledge of technology would have no purpose. And I haven’t studied history enough, I never liked it as a school subject nor all the historical novels, before … I shake my head in amusement.
I could carry with me the strength to fight, even against Fate. I am stubborn, much more than Jamie Fraser!
I would risk being burned at the stake already in the first chapter of my adventure, but I would fight until the last moment, even without a sword.
I scrutinize the gigantic boulder above me again.
I sigh. And then I laugh.
I move my right arm cautiously into the dim light and touch the stone. It jumps back slightly into its pedestal.
It’s just colored styrofoam.
Craigh na Dun doesn’t really exist. These silhouettes were created from casts of some of the Callanish Standing Stones, on the Isle of Lewis, only to be used in the television series. And the hum, over there beyond these fictitious rocks, is a wind machine on a set. The stones are stored in this corner, safe in the studios, waiting to appear in some new sequence or in an advertising photo shoot.
A door slams behind me, letting in another breath of fresh air. There is a loud “action” shouted in the distance and then deafening noises from the set behind me. I remove my hand from the light boulder and start walking backwards.
I choose to stay.
I’m already on the right side of the time. What I want is right here, not far from me.

(C) 2021 Barbara Businaro

The real hill of Craigh na Dun, without stones, in Kinloch Rannoch, at the private property of Tullochcroisk Farm.

Italian version.
